July 22nd, 2008 - Cubs Cant Pull It Out
Quesionable calls, poor mental focus and lack of timely hitting doomed the Cubs to yet another meltdown against the Marlins after having a late inning lead. The Marlins rallied late after fielding miscues to take a 7-5 lead in the top of the 7th inning. The Cubs threatened in the bottom half with two men on, but no Cubs could drive them home. Mike Geraldi, Mike Albert, David Wernecke and Kavit Beyersdorf led the Cubs offensive attack, hammering the ball and sending rocket shots all over the field. Matt Dehn struggled a bit in the first inning, as he had not had ample time to warm up, and gave up three runs. Dehn kept the Cubs in the game however, scattering hits over the next 6 innings. The Cubs could not overcome their miscues and Dehn was handed another tough luck loss. The Cubs remain in second place behind the Marlins with the second best record in the CMBA, and can lock up the number three overall seed with wins against the Yankees (7/24) and Rangers (7/26).
July 21st, 2008 - Cubs Win
The Cubs overcame the Vikings with some late inning heroics in the second meeting between the two teams to sweep the season series with a 7-5 victory. "GET GOIN!" Mike Geraldi knocked in the winning runs in the bottom half of the 6th inning, with a 1-on, opposite field blast to left. Kavit Beyersdorf finished off his complete game victory in the 7th and finished with 5 runs, 2 earned, on 4 hits, 4 bb, and 7 Ks. Mike Albert ended his hitting slump going 2-3 and knocking in a run, David "Dubs" Wernecke joined the top of the Cubs' leader board with his 3rd homerun of the season, and John Hester added his first round tripper of the year to help propel the Cubs past the Vikings. Beyersdorf improves to 5-0 on the year with a 3.54 ERA, and the Cubs as a team are 15-4-3.
July 1st, 2008 - Vikings Downed
After a 3-2 stint with 1 tie and 1 rainout follwing the Cubs victory over the Red Sox on June 11th, the Cubs quickly put away their 10th win of the season. The Cubs scored 6 in the first inning against the Vikings and rolled to a 15-1 victory in a 5 inning mercy rule shortened game behind a solid offensive output and masterful pitching performance by Mike Jimenez. In that first inning, the Vikings loaded the bases with Cubs for catcher John Francel. Francel took the first pitch he saw and delivered the ball express air mail to the destination of: beyond left field fence, Taft High school, Chicago,Il for a grand slam home run. Christian Allen-Ford then drove in 2 more with an RBI single to cap the 6 run first inning. The Cubs chased the Vikings starter after only 2 innings of work, which could arguably have been a good thing and a bad thing at the same time; while the Cubs put up 9 more runs, they did so rather painfully as 5 Cubs' batters were hit by pitches by the Vikings' reliever. In total, the Cubs had 10 hits, with RBI doubles from Merak Metz, Mark Jaeger, and Rob Draniczarek. While on the bump, Jimenez gave up only one hit, a solo shot to left, while striking out 5 and walking 3 to improve his record to 5-2 and lower his ERA to 3.85. The Cubs look to extend their winning streak to 3 on before the all-star break, seeking a little revenge against the Hounds on Wednesday, July 2nd, who beat them 4-3 earlier in the year.
June 11th, 2008 - Cubs Defeat Red Sox
After a long weekend of baseball, the Cubbies take the field again defeating the Red Sox 14-8. Kavit Beyersdorf gets it done again in his 2nd win and complete game of the season. In 7 innings, Beyersdorf gave up 8, while striking out 6 and walking 2. While not his best performance, it was more than enough to overcome the opposition. The Cubs' offense started the game strong, scoring 7 runs in the top half of the 1st. They then added 5 more in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd. Eric Drey went 3 for 3 on the day with 3 singles, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs. Merak Metz (2-3, 2 RBI) and John Hester (2-2, 3B, 3R, BB) both added to the offensive onslaught. Join us Saturday at 10 AM at Taft HS as the Cubs battle the Hounds.
May 29th, 2008 - Cubs Tie
The Cubs could not capitalize on several opportunities to put this game away, committing several baserunning gaffes and fielding errors, while playing to a draw with the Electrons at 4 runs apiece. The Cubs and Electrons will most likely play the necessary extra frames during their next meeting. Mike Jimenez got the start against his old squad, but didn't appear to have his best stuff, going only 3 and 1/3 innings and was charged with 3 runs after leaving in the 4th. Kavit Beyersdorf came on in relief and surrendered another Electron run before settling down in his 2 and 2/3 innings. George Hickey relieved Beyersdorf in the 7th and overpowered the Electrons, striking out 2 of the 3 he faced. The Cubs had pulled within a run when Christian Allen Ford motored home from third to score the tying run on a passed ball with a spectacular head first slide. The Cubs then had opportunities with 2 men on and 2 out in the bottom half of the 6th but could not get the runners home. In the 7th, pinch runner Allen Ford came on for Beyersdorf who had walked, and promptly stole second. Allen Ford then moved into third but was stranded there as the Cubs could not put the ball in play. The Cubs look to become the only undefeated team left in the league on Saturday as they face off against the 4-0 Browns.
